Learning to trim my own horses' feet...

Learning to trim my own horses has been a real adventure. It’s simple and endlessly complex all at the same time.

Even in my PT program, we glossed over the feet because that was “farrier territory” - but I knew it was something I needed to understand more deeply in order to really help the horses in my care.

Because my kiddos have to absorb all of my learning curves I took over trimming my own in 2020.

I’ve been feeling a bit down on myself because I still don’t feel like I have Forrest where I’d like him to be - but then I peeked back at some photos from 2018 and remembered where this all started….

The before photo shows:

  • underrun heels

  • atrophied digital cushion

  • sad, thrushy frog with a deep central sulcus infection

The after photo shows:

  • heels moving back towards the widest part of the frog

  • improvement in digital cushion

  • healthier frog with no thrush

Still a foot with much room for improvement (can you see the twist? Left side of frog/heel being larger than right?)

but this is why we take pics to remember how far we’ve come!
