Clicker training, R+, or positive reinforcement training, are all different names for the same basic training paradigm where we reward the horse for a correct answer by providing them with something they want (usually food!).

I’ve watched a friend train wild mustangs with R+, taking them from feral to happily toting her around under saddle.

I’ve watched a friend introduce R+ training with horses at the rescue she works for - and horses who couldn’t be handled for nearly two years finally started to make progress.

I became fully convinced of the power of R+ training when I started using it with my rehabilitation clients - horses currently in pain or with a history of pain who had either grown reactive or shut down to traditional pressure and release methods were absolutely thriving when we introduced the clicker.

…And now I’ve taught countless horse owners how to get started with clicker training their own horses.

As a physical therapist I love to use clicker training for rehabilitative exercise, to alter the way a horse carries himself, and to change associations with things like saddles and girths when previous fit was poor.

But you can train your horse to do absolutely ANYTHING with clicker training!
